Jazz-funk breakbeaters from Newcastle

Formed in Newcastle back in 2007 at the hand of jazz guitarist Nick Pride, The Pimptones are a deep funk / jazz-dance outfit playing original material in the style of The Meters, JTQ and Charlie Hunter. The group is equally at home in a noisy nightclub or intimate jazz setting, and is most likely to bring the roof of either down with their heavy dancefloor grooves, big breaks and sophisticated jazz numbers.

Funk fans were quick to catch on to the band, flocking to the launch of self-financed demo “It’s The Pimptones” released on Jazz Girl Records. As the following grew, promoters drafted the group in to support touring acts such as Maceo Parker, Candi Staton, Youngblood Brass Band and Hot 8 Brass Band. By 2009 the Pimptones were regularly playing some of the UK’s finest funk venues, including The Yardbird in Birmingham, Hi-Fi Club in Leeds, Jazzbar in Edinburgh, as well as festivals such as The Mostly Jazz Festival, The North East Funk and Soul Review and The Gateshead International Jazz Festival. Later that same year Wack Records released 7” single "Deeper Pimp", which went on to enjoy extended radioplay across Europe, and became the first of the group’s trademark “Live-Band Bootlegs”, a unique approach to the Mash-Up genre, and a show stopping live feature. Regular collaborations with vocalists like super soul sister Jess Roberts (Smoove / Acid Jazz Records), superb jazz singer Zoe Gilby and Susan Hamilton (Susan Hamilton Trio) and top remixers/producers like Smoove, Diesler and Renegades of Jazz further developed the Pimptones’ sound, preparing them for.

So what’s next? Anticipation amongst loyal funk-followers grew for the release of debut album "Midnight Feast Of Jazz", which features guest vocals, finely crafted melodies, and dance-floor beats. Out now on Record Kicks, stay tuned for more!
